About The Small Business Game
The Small Business Game targets secondary school students throughout Scotland, aged 14 - 18. It can be used in class as a fun, interactive way to learn about a variety of concepts from across the school curriculum.
Through a Flash-based online game environment, students learn how to run a sports retail store based on retailing football club merchandise. In the process they experience the start-up and management of a business, learning both from their mistakes and from their successes.
Students can:
- Learn what it is like to manage a small business.
- Learn what works in business-and what doesn’t work.
- Experiment with different strategies and tactics to see the impact of your decisions.
- Play the game well and you might be able to dominate the Leader board and win prizes.
The game is free for secondary school students to play thanks to funding from Microsoft Partners in Learning and the Scottish Qualifications Authority. Teachers will need to register their school if it hasn't been registered already. The Scottish Qualifications Authority is responsible for approving access for your school.
As an online game schools shouldn't need to install any software (it does require Flash Player 8 or higher). If you have an internet browser and you can access the internet, then you can play the game.
You do not need a suite of computers either. Teachers can choose to run the game from their laptop and project the game in class. As a registered teacher you can access our Teacher Resources Area for more ideas on how to use sport4life in class.
Students can also play the game without being at school. Our curriculum based resources are integrated into the game. Students don't even see them!
